Résumé
Cet article propose un éclairage nouveau sur l’identité véritable des Touaregs Maghcharen, ces nomades sahariens que les traditions historiques soudanaises présentent comme étant les fondateurs de la cité de Tombouctou. Il se trouve, en effet, que l’ethnonyme « Maghcharen » qui sert à les désigner n’est pas leur véritable nom. Ces derniers s’appelleraient, en réalité, Kel Azawad. Ils sont une tawšit touarègue appartenant au groupe des Messoufa, eux-mêmes, issus, de la grande confédération berbère des Sanhadja qui a essaimé dans le Maghreb et le Sahara, au lendemain des invasions arabes de l’Afrique du Nord, au VIIe siècle.

Abstract
This article sheds new light on the true identity of the Tuareg Maghsharan, the saharan nomads whom sudanese historical traditions present as the founders of Timbuktu. It turns out that the ethnonym ‘Maghsharan’ used to designate them is not their real name. They are, in fact, called Kel Azawad. They are a tuareg Tawsit belonging to the group of Massufa, themselves, descended from the great berber confederation of the Sanhadja, which spread throughout the Maghreb and the Sahara after the arab invasions of North Africa, in the 7th century.
